"Militaria Collectors refers to people whose interest are in collecting the artifacts of the military, generally in terms of collecting them as antiques of historical significance"

- Definition from Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia.

In every war that man has been fought, the victor has a tendency to keep something from the field of battle to remind himself of his conquest. Whether its a badge , a gun or even a vanquished enemy's cloth insignia, these items are called war souvenirs or war booty in general and are often kept & well displayed in his home as a reminder of his victory.

However, it is important to note that not all of these were war booty as some of these awards were still kept by the very same soldiers whom they were decorated with. For these soldiers, these awards were a testament to their bravery and for their future generations to understand what their forefathers have gone through. A good example here would be the writer , Frank Huekemes ,whose father was a former Lieutenant with the 116th Panzer-Division "Windhund". At the age of 13, an age which his father thought would be the right time for Frank to understand his WW2 experience, he handed Frank his various wartime decorations and fascinated by them, it sparked a lifelong hobby of collecting and examining them. It is a passion that has culminated in him writing several books about it.

As time goes by, this obscure hobby of collecting war memorabilia has in turn become more recognized & gained an international appeal the world over via the internet, books & magazines in a multitude of different languages. War movies and documentaries have also made a significant impact on collecting militaria as prices of these authentic items have steadily gone up through the years.
